FEATURED PROJECTS
I-515 Charleston Boulevard Interchange
Owner: Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT)
Location: Las Vegas, NV Date: 2022-2024 This project consisted of constructing one new auxiliary lane in each direction of I-515, widening existing on/off ramps, constructing new MSE retaining walls, installating new drainage features throughout the project corridor, adding new soundwalls, and related street and pedestrian access improvements. Berns Infrastructure supported the prime contractor by providing engineered designs for multiple bridge falsework systems, MSE wall access falsework, bridge formwork, overhead clearance warning devices for vehicular traffic, and a jack-and-bore launching pit backstop. Design peer reviews were also provided for other high-risk designs. |
I-5 Crown Valley Widening
Owner: California Department of Transportation (Caltrans)
Location: Orange County, CA Date: 2022-2023 This project involved widening several miles of I-5, construction of numerous types of retaining walls adjacent to the freeway, replacement of an over-crossing bridge structure, installation of new storm drainage features, and realignment of several on/off ramps. Berns Infrastructure supported the prime contractor by providing an engineered design for a high-risk multi-level tieback shoring wall extending over 1,000 feet in length. Strict deflection requirements where included as part of the design requirements due to a commercial center located just above the top of the cut slope behind the wall system. |
Operations Access Points Red Beach
Owner: U.S. Naval Facilities Engineering Command
Location: MCB Camp Pendleton, CA Date: 2021-2023 This design-build project consisted of upgrading the access route between the amphibious landing training beach and inland training area to improve military training access. In also included the construction of a new double-track North County Transit District railroad bridge to replace the existing dual arched concrete bridge. Berns Infrastructure supported the prime contractor by providing engineered design of a two high-risk multi-level tieback shoring walls adjacent to the live railroad track, with the temporary tiebacks crossing through a patchwork of permanent tiebacks from separate tieback walls on the opposite side of the tracks. Berns Infrastructure also provided on-site engineering inspection and design of other temporary access falsework structures. |
BNSF - Santa Ana River Bridge
Owner: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
Location: Corona, CA Date: 2017-2022 This project consisted of constructing a variety of flood and scour protection features to protect a 3-track BNSF railroad bridge and the adjacent channel area. Berns Infrastructure supported the prime contractor with a variety of engineering design and construction management support including design of over 20 temporary engineered structures (excavation shoring systems, formwork, access and forming falsework, temporary bridge, utility supports, etc), design peer review, structural inspection and observation, technical submittal document preparation, scheduling, stakeholder and subcontractor coordination, contract change order documentation and negotiation, and operations planning and management support. |
Milwaukee Art Museum Parking Structure
Owner: Milwaukee Art Museum
Location: Milwaukee, WI Date: 2022 A local engineering firm providing structural maintenance planning for the art museum engaged Berns Infrastructure to perform a structural inspection and analysis of an existing tieback sheet pile wall originally constructed as part of a 3-story underground parking structure. Water seepage through tieback holes, related corrosion concerns, and a previously-failed cathodic protection system were major aspects of the analysis. The findings were provided to the prime engineering firm for inclusion with their overall maintenance planning report. |
2nd Street Bridge
Owner: City of San Bernardino
Location: San Bernardino, CA Date: 2021-2022 This project consisted of removing a deteriorating multi-span timber and concrete bridge and replacing it with a new reinforced concrete bridge structure. Berns Infrastructure supported the prime contractor by providing demolition observation as well as engineered designs for several temporary structures including multiple excavation shoring walls, formwork shoring towers, and a pedestrian access bridge. Berns Infrastructure also designed a temporary utility support system from which an active water main was suspended and required to be kept active throughout the life of the project. |
Higuera Street Bridge
Owner: City of Culver City
Location: Culver City, CA Date: 2021 This project consisted of controlled demolition and removal of an existing multi-span bridge structure over the Los Angeles river, and construction of a replacement bridge. Berns Infrastructure supported the prime contractor by providing project-required engineer observation of demolition activities and also performed hydraulic flow analysis of the river channel with consideration to understanding potential flood event impacts on construction activities, materials, and equipment within the channel area. |
McKelvey Park Detention Basin
Owner: Santa Clara Valley Water District
Location: Mountain View, CA Date: 2017-2019 This project consisted of constructing a new detention basin as part of local flood control infrastructure for Permanente Creek within the city. It was one of three seperately-bid projects for improving flood control in the area. The basin also doubles as a recreational multi-field baseball facility when not being used for floodwater storage. Berns Infrastructure supported the prime contractor by providing engineered designs of multiple temporary earth retention shoring walls (cantilever pile and MSE systems) as well as CPM schedule updates and impact analyses related to project utility delays. |
